Effect of hydrogen charging on Charpy impact toughness of an X70 pipeline steel

Hydrogen uptake in steel structures can cause a degradation mechanical properties such as toughness, and induce cracks. This phenomenon is widely known hydrogen embrittlement. For structural steels subjected to cathodic protection or pipelines transporting high-pressure gas, embrittlement represents an important challenge. Charpy V-notch testing provides fast inexpensive method for quantifying the impact toughness of steel. However, its validity assessing uncertain. In this work, influence on API 5L X70 pipeline investigated. tests are performed air, both uncharged after electrochemical pre-charging. Different charging times used, hydrogen-induced cracking studied. The temperature range between -80°C +20°C. A rising upper shelf observed specimens ductile-to-brittle transition (DBTT) not reached tested temperatures. material, causes reduction energy at higher test temperatures, with highest measured room temperature. post-mortem analysis fracture surfaces suggests that presence lattice aids formation separations during fracture, lowering absorbed energy.
